Busy Festive Season

Christmas at The George is looking very busy. Demand has grown over the years - especially for Hogmanay which is now full for 2011/12. Usually this is a slow move and we wouldn't normally sell out until mid December. Well done to the team who has worked hard over the years to make this the success it has become!

The Master Chefs of Great Britain

Well done to our Executive Chef, Stewart Jarvie, on being recognised as a leading Chef! Stewart has been honoured by his peers and has become a member of 'The Master Chefs of Great Britain'. Not only this, but he has recently spent two weeks in Abu Dhabi at the Rotana Beach Hotel where he launched a fabulous Scottish menu. He had to source the best of Scottish food from the desert! Well done Stewart.

Great day out

Thank you to all our colleagues who had a great day out on Craigleath Island, just off North Berwick. For the second year we have sent people to the island to help clear giant weeds that stop the wee puffins from nesting! (We did pick them up again!)

Principal Hayley Scotland Sweeps the Board at 2011 Scottish Hotel Awards

It was a night for celebrations on Sunday 27th March 2011 as Principal Hayley’s two Scottish hotels swept the board at the 2011 Scottish Hotel Awards.
The George walked away with five accolades in total including Reception Innovation Award, Business Performance Gold Medal and a Design Medal for its stylish Panorama Suite. The hotel is renowned within Edinburgh for its first class service and luxurious facilities and is no stranger to winning awards - in 2009 the George was named Best City Hotel in Edinburgh. Both the George Hotel and the Grand Central Hotel picked up Hotel of the Year for their respective cities, paying testament to the high levels of service that have become synonymous with the Principal Hayley brand.
Regional manager for Principal Hayley in Scotland, David Welch, who picked up the title of Regional Manager of the Year at the awards, said: “Our Scottish hotels are some of the finest in the UK and I am extremely proud of our achievements at the Scottish Hotel Awards. Despite the tough economic climate both The George Hotel and the Grand Central Hotel continue to prosper and excel – a sign of truly great hotels.”
Sister hotel, the Grand Central Hotel picked up the most awards on the night including the Friendly Service Award, Event Venue of the Year for the stunning Grand Room of Glasgow ballroom, Rising Star Event Venue of the year, a Taste Award for the newly opened Tempus Bar & Restaurant and Urbane Bar of the Year for its elegant Champagne Central bar which overlooks Central Station. Principal Hayley’s £20m restoration of the historic Grand Central Hotel was also given a prestigious Gold Laurel.
The Grand Central Hotel’s general manager Laurie Nicol was also commended on the night with a Gold Medal Award for her role in the hotel’s £20m refurbishment while head chef James Murphy was named Executive Chef of the Year.
Manager of the Grand Central Hotel, Laurie Nicol said: “To be acknowledged by your fellow peers is a great honour, especially when up against such tough competition. We have had a great few months since the hotel reopened and it is an amazing feeling to know that our hard work has paid off.”
Now in its 8th year the prestigious Scottish Hotel Awards aim to recognise exceptional achievement in the Scottish hotel industry. The awards were recently described by First Minister Alex Salmond as being “the flagship awards for the hotel industry”. Nominations for the accolades take place throughout the year with thousands of people both inside and outside the industry voting for their chosen winners.
