Hotel Russell Refurb Blog

We are delighted to announce a large-scale programme of refurbishments taking place at the hotel early in 2012.

Our guests love to hear the history of the Hotel when we meet with them and one of the facts that always gets brought up is the Pyrenean marble and the reason that it progressively stops as you move up through the building. Surely, they say, it should be opposite. The marble should be where the suites are? Indeed today, we say, suites tend to be where the views are best but you must cast your mind back to when the hotel was first opened. The wider, more intricately decorated lower floors were where the rich and famous stayed as there were no lifts to transport them higher. Thankfully today we do have lifts, three of them in fact. This month, as you take the lifts through the building you will smell the fresh paint and feel the new cushioned carpets under your feet. As we write the blog, we are surrounded by a busy team of refurbishment experts who are laying new carpets, plastering walls, painting skirting boards and preparing newly refurbished areas for your arrival. We hope you will like the transformation. Last month we returned 60 more refurbished rooms to service. With their warm colour schemes and super comfy mattresses they are the perfect place to dream of your next days activities in this bustling cultural metropolis.

Buildings speak for themselves

It was Julia Morgan, one of Americas greatest early female architects who said “Architecture is a visual art, and the buildings speak for themselves.” Well we happen to agree with Ms. Morgan and know a certain building of which we are custodians that speaks volumes about itself. Over the coming months (during our incredibly exciting refurbishment) we will be bringing you the latest photos, news and plans for the future of Hotel Russell. We want to keep you updated on the new part to the hotels story and to make sure that you, as our guest, are kept involved in this transformation. When we were refurbishing the beautiful Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow last year we found that what people loved seeing was the before and after of each room. Well, hot on the heels of our beautiful sister property, we will be bringing you the shots as we get them. It is time for the hotel to get its voice and to speak once again for itself. We hope you enjoy and we cant wait to show you around when you are back in London next.
